(Robinson) — A local hero is being honored in Indiana. Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Sammy Davis will be named as Indiana’s 2018 Sachem (SAY-chem) Award winner. The award is the state’s highest honor; it has been given out 12 times since its restoration in 2005. Davis is a Vietnam veteran who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor following his service in Vietnam. The 71 year-old Davis lives in the southern Owen County town of Freedom. He had previously lived near Flat Rock. Davis is the second person to receive the award from current Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb. Last year, the Governor gave the Sachem to Holocaust survivor, and Terre Haute resident, Eva Kor.
