(Effingham) — The Effingham County Board chairman is expressing support for the “Cross at the Crossroads” mural. Jim Niemann said yesterday in a report to the board that the cross is part of the citizens’ right to free speech. The mural is on city property and the Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation is calling on the mayor of Effingham to remove it. The work was painted by a local artist and features an American flag and a cross. City leaders haven’t taken any action.
