Schools and Individuals Targeted by “Swatting”

(Undated) – Schools across the country are dealing with something called “swatting.” “Swatting” is a hoax that involves making calls or claims of an active shooter to provoke large responses by law enforcement groups, such as SWAT teams, hence the name. A student at Taylorville High School is facing charges related to “swatting” another incident is under investigation in Virden, IL. Similar stories have been reported in New York, New Jersey, South Dakota, and Florida in recent months. “Swatting” is believed to be what prompted the recent “lockdown” of both Oblong Schools. That incident is still under investigation. This is not a new practice, “swatting” has “been on the radar” of law enforcement for years. However, there seems to be an uptick in the practice.
