Oblong Will Be Flushing Hydrants Next Week

(Oblong) – The Village of Oblong will be doing routine maintenance on the water system next week. According to Oblong Mayor, Teresa Fielder, Oblong Public Works employees will begin flushing water mains and hydrants within the Oblong Public Water Supply system beginning Monday. She says this is done as part of a scheduled preventative maintenance program to help maintain good water quality and also to exercise hydrants and ensure their proper operation in the event of a fire emergency. Fielder says flushing will occur between 6 am – 6 pm daily and is expected to be completed by Saturday, May 20th.

Flushing in one area may cause discoloration in the entire system. As the system is flushed, you may experience a temporary reduction in water pressure. You may also see some discoloration or cloudiness in the water, or you may notice a slight change in the taste or odor of your water.
These conditions are normal during flushing activities and are only temporary. The flushing process often disturbs the minerals and sediment in water mains, causing them to dissolve and temporarily discolor the water in the system.
Even though the water is perfectly safe, OPW recommends running the cold water for several minutes to help clear the discoloration before using it for drinking or cooking.
Please check your water before doing laundry. In the event you do have laundry that is stained, Oblong Public Works has a rust and iron stain remover available to customers upon request.
