(Undated) — August is “Romance Scam Awareness Month,” and scammers cashed in over the past three years. A Better Business Bureau study shows that scammers netted a billion dollars in the past three years running “catfishing” scams in the U.S. alone. According to BBB Investigator, Don O’Brien, those who want to date online should not share everything about themselves.
O’Brien also says to be leery of someone who won’t communicate “face to face.”
He says if you feel you have been a victim of a “catfishing” scam you should contact local law enforcement, report the scam via the BBB Scam Tracker, and to the Federal Trade Commission.
