According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, there were twenty-nine more fatalities on state roadways in 2023 than in 2022 bringing the total for the year to twelve-hundred-seventy-five, reversing a trend that saw one hundred fewer fatalities in 2022. Officials blame distracted driving and driving while intoxicated for the increase.
