Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a fantastic game, with one of the highest Metacritic scores of any Microsoft Studios game. The reviews have all been fantastic, and many players are looking to check it out to see what it is all about. One key question being asked is about how the adventure is structured.

Is the game open world, or does it take the approach of the Wolfenstein games from the same developer, where there are individual levels to complete?
While Indiana Jones and the Great Circle isn’t open world, there are open zones and levels to explore in between each major mission or sequence. This is similar to some of the more open levels in Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus and Wolfenstein: Youngblood, although the execution here is much better than those games.
These open levels allow you to approach situations and activities how you like. This is repeated throughout each one, offering a similar experience throughout Indy’s journey. You can use disguises to access the various areas and restricted locations, gaining information and completing “checklist-esque” activities.
While this won’t be for everyone, you can mainline the story, which offers more traditional pacing for an Indy adventure. The open-world parts of the game are optional. This has setpieces, puzzles, exploration, and galavanting to enjoy while not forcing you to finish everything before you leave an area.
As mentioned, this reflects MachineGames‘ previous work on the Wolfenstein franchise, so it shouldn’t be too surprising for anyone who is a fan of their games.
You can play the game now on Xbox, PC, and Game Pass. Don’t forget, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be available next spring on PS5, where you can experience the open-ended areas and gameplay. It will be the shortest time it has taken for any Xbox exclusive to come to PlayStation.
