(Undated) — Ameren gas customers could soon see an increase in their bills. The Illinois Commerce Commission is considering a request from Ameren Illinois that could raise its natural gas customers’ bills by between $8 and $10 per month. Ameren, which serves much of central and southern Illinois, says the spending is necessary to comply with federal safety regulations. However, a group of consumer advocates came together Wednesday to reiterate their position that the request is too much. Eric DeBellis, CUB General Counsel, says this has become a way too common request from the utility.
The groups say the utility’s profit margin is too large and that its infrastructure spending is unjustified. The ICC will decide on the rate request in November, ahead of new rates going into effect at the start of next year.
