Fans now have under a year to wait until they can play Grand Theft Auto 6 – and they’re sharing their excitement online.

Grand Theft Auto 6 was officially revealed at the end of 2023 via a brief teaser trailer. Developers Rockstar games initially said the long-awaited sequel would launch at some point in 2025 but earlier this month, confirmed it had been delayed until 2026.

The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and GTA 6 is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve,” developers said in a statement, alongside a new release date of May 26, 2026.

Fans were initially furious about the pushback but yesterday (May 26), many took to social media to celebrate the fact they now had less than a year to wait to play Grand Theft Auto 6.

“In EXACTLY one year from today, GTA 6 officially releases. ONE MORE YEAR until we experience the most anticipated game of all time and Rockstar’s magnum opus – Grand Theft Auto 6,” one fan wrote. “YOOO GTA 6 is actually releasing in exactly one year from today?! May 26, 2026 can’t come fast enough! After all those delays and corporate BS, we’re finally getting the game we’ve been waiting FOREVER for,” added another.

“On this day next year, we will finally get to start GTA 6 for the first time. A once in a lifetime experience,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “I’m so tired of living in a world without GTA 6,” replied another.

However some fans are still convinced Grand Theft Auto 6 will be delayed again. It wouldn’t be the first time Rockstar have delayed a delayed release either – Red Dead Redemption 2 was originally meant to launch fall 2017 but was pushed back to spring 2018 before eventually releasing in fall 2018.

Switch 2 and PC still don’t know when they’ll be able to play Grand Theft Auto 6 either, with the updated release window only mentioning PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

Following the news of the delay, Rockstar shared an “unprecedented” amount of information about the game, which led to fans thinking they’ve uncovered who’ll be voicing the game’s protagonists, Lucia and Jason.

In other news, the team behind Atomfall has said the survival game could be getting a sequel and a TV adaptation.
