HBO’s adaptation of The Last Of Us is set to continue with a third season.
Created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the post-apocalyptic drama follows Joel and Ellie as they travel across the US in the aftermath of a mass fungal infection.
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey lead the show’s cast, alongside Gabriel Luna, Isabela Merced, Young Mazino, Kaitlyn Dever, Catherine O’Hara, and Jeffrey Wright.
After the show’s first season debuted in January 2023, the seven-episode second season came to an end on May 25, 2025.
Has The Last Of Us been renewed for season 3?
HBO announced The Last Of Us had been renewed for a third season a week prior to season two’s debut in April 2025.
In a statement, showrunner Craig Mazin said: “We approached season two with the goal of creating something we could be proud of. The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew.”
Is there a release date for season 3?
A release date hasn’t been announced. However, if the show follows the same two-year gap between seasons one and two, the third season will likely arrive in 2027.
What do we know about season 3?
Based on the season two finale, and events in The Last Of Us Part 2 video game, the third season looks set to pivot attention to Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby.
While Abby might be the primary focus, showrunner Craig Mazin has teased the return of other characters in season three, including Pedro Pascal’s Joel.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the third season, Mazin said: “All I can say is we haven’t seen the last of Kaitlyn Dever, and we haven’t seen the last of Bella Ramsey, and we haven’t seen the last of Isabela Merced, and we haven’t even seen the last of a lot of people who are currently dead in the story.”
