Matthew Goode takes on the role of troubled detective Carl Morck in Netflix series Dept. Q.
Based on the book series Department Q by Jussi Adler-Olsen, the crime thriller follows the emotionally scarred DCI as he haphazardly recruits misfit officers for his new cold case unit within a basement office space in Edinburgh.
The Department Q novels were originally turned into a series of Danish films, starring Nikolaj Lie Kaas in the lead role, with this Netflix series being the first English language adaptation.
Alongside Goode, other cast members in the series include Chloe Pirrie, Alexej Manvelov, Kelly Macdonald, and Leah Byrne.
The series is created by Chandni Lakhani and Scott Frank, who is best known for his work on The Queen’s Gambit, Logan, and Godless.
Has Dept. Q been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, Netflix has not announced whether Dept. Q will return for a second season. The first season was released on May 29, 2025, so a decision will likely be made in the following weeks.
However, if the show manages to attract enough viewers, there’s plenty of source material for a second season. The show is based on the Department Q noir crime novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, and there are ten books in total.
What have the cast said about a potential season 2?
Matthew Goode has expressed his interest in returning for a second season, and has already had conversations with show creator Scott Frank about it.
“I was saying to Scott the other day, what we really need to do is, A, season two, and we need to get Alexej [Manvelov] into eight weeks of Krav Magar training so the fight scenes in season two can be amazing,” Goode told Yahoo UK. “It’s going to be a sort of Syrian Bourne.”
