Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services Reports Data Breach

(Undated) — Hundreds of Illinois residents may have had their information stolen in a recent data breach after a hacker accessed the email of an Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services employee. According to HFS, information accessed by hackers “may have included customer names, social security numbers, driver’s license or state identification card numbers, financial information related to child support, child support or Medicaid identification and case numbers, and date of birth.” The agency learned February 11th that someone was conducting a “phishing scam” targeting HFS employees and attempting to gain access to their usernames and passwords. As a result, one HFS employee’s emails and documents were compromised. The Department has notified those affected.
