“Safety First, Avoid the Worst” During Fall Harvest

By Tony Collins Sep 16, 2025 | 6:42 AM

(Undated) — The Fall harvest time can be one of the busiest and most dangerous seasons of the year for the agriculture industry. Agriculture is the leading industry in Illinois, and farmers across the state will be moving equipment along roadways during the harvest season, which typically begins in early September and can last into November. Drivers should expect to see farm vehicles on the road during this time. Authorities are reminding motorists and farmers alike to share the road to help reduce crashes involving tractors, implements, and other farm equipment. Drivers are reminded to slow down as soon as they see a farm vehicle, yield, be patient, take a second look, and look for the lights on farm vehicles. Farmers are reminded to take time to wipe off reflectors, flashing lights, and any other warning devices on equipment before entering the roadway and pay attention to traffic backing up while traveling between fields, and look for opportunities to ease them. Governor, JB Pritzker, has proclaimed September 21st to September 27th as “Farm Safety and Health Week” in Illinois with a theme of “Safety First, Avoid the Worst.” This year marks the 81st year of the annual observance nationwide.
