Mrs. Phyllis Lee Groom, a cherished soul known for her loving heart and creative spirit, passed away at the age of 77 on October 27, 2025, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, following emergency open heart surgery. Born on September 29, 1948, in Louisiana, Missouri, Phyllis was a beacon of warmth and generosity throughout her life.
Phyllis grew up in the embrace of her late parents, Lee Forest and Ethel Alberta (Harris) Cox, alongside her sister, Ann (Gary) Cox, of Elsberry, MO, her journey of love and companionship was marked by the fond memories she shared with her late husbands, William “Bill” Todd and Steven E. Groom, and the cherished memories with her stepchildren, Michael Groom and Richard Groom, both of whom preceded her in death.
Phyllis’s legacy continues through her loving son, Michael Dale Todd, Robinson, IL; her stepdaughter, Stephanie ( Darrin) Gray, Chino Valley, AZ; as well as her step-grandson, Brian Gray, and her nephew, Chad Christopher Cox. Elsberry, MO. Each family member reflects a piece of Phyllis’s generous nature and her ability to touch lives in profound ways.
Professionally, Phyllis dedicated many years to the Shoe Factory in Elsberry, MO. and served her community with a smile as a waitress, hostess and mixologist for the American Legion in Gulfport, MS. Her work ethic and the joy she brought to her roles were emblematic of her character.
Phyllis’s faith and her belief in life after earthly death was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and providing solace through the trials and triumphs she encountered. She lived her beliefs through acts of kindness, generosity and a commitment to caring for others.
A passionate pet lover, Phyllis’s two dogs were not just pets but part of her family. Her love for animals was matched by her passion for decorating, with Christmas being a particularly special time of year for her. Her home was always a festive sanctuary, reflecting her creative flair and the joy she found in celebrating the season.
Friends and family would agree that the words “loving,” “generous,” and “creative” best describe Phyllis. She had an innate ability to make everyone around her feel valued and loved, often putting the needs of others before her own.
As we remember Phyllis, we are reminded of the words of Helen Keller: “What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” Phyllis Lee Groom loved deeply and was deeply loved in return, and her spirit will forever be a cherished part of those fortunate enough to have known her. Phyllis’ life was a testament to the beauty of giving and the enduring power of love. As we bid her farewell, we hold tight to the memories and the love she shared, which continue to inspire and comfort us. Her light, though no longer present in this world, shines in the hearts of those she touched.
A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday November 6, 2025, from 12:00 noon until the time of Services at 2:00 pm at Pulliam Funeral Home in Robinson, IL. Pastor Shane Bopp will offer words of comfort and thanksgiving to those who attend. An opportunity for friends and family to share memories and stories about Phyllis will given. Private burial of cremated remains will follow, next to her beloved husband, Steve, in the Robinson New Cemetery.
The family has suggested memorial donations to the Crawford County Humane shelter or to the Robinson Food Pantry. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
