High Winds Prompt Elevated Fire Risk Warning

By Tony Collins Feb 24, 2026 | 6:39 AM

(Undated) — The National Weather Service is warning against “elevated conditions for wildfire growth and spread today.” They say strong gusty southwest winds are expected to develop later today, with gusts expected between 30 and 35 mph. They say relative humidity values are also expected to drop to 30 to 35 percent in the afternoon. Those factors, coupled with the “very dry conditions across the region,” create an elevated risk for wildfire/brushfire growth and spread today for any fires that get started. They remind the public to exercise extra caution today by avoiding actions that could lead to fire starts.
