Get Your Mail-In Ballots in the Mail ASAP

By Tony Collins Mar 10, 2026 | 6:33 AM

(Undated) — Crawford County Clerk, Beckie Staley, is reminding those with mail-in ballots to get those in the mail as soon as possible. She says recent “workflow” changes at the post office could delay or even invalidate vote-by-mail ballots if not postmarked in time. According to Staley, previously, mail was postmarked the day you dropped it in the mailbox. However, now it will be postmarked the day it’s processed at the post office, which can sometimes be one to two days later. She reminds voters that vote-by-mail ballots must be postmarked by election day to be counted, and any ballots with a late postmark will not be counted. She says if you are returning your ballot this week, consider requesting a “manual postmark” at the post office counter. The Illinois Primary Election is one week from today on March 17th.
