By Tony Collins Mar 13, 2026 | 6:22 AM

(Undated) — The Crawford County Health Department has received notice from the Illinois Department of Public Health that birds collected in Crawford County have tested positive for avian influenza. The CCHD says Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, is widespread in wild birds worldwide and is causing sporadic outbreaks in poultry. It poses a risk of infecting other animals, including dairy cows, and even humans. They say that while the current public health risk is low, the Crawford County Health Department is monitoring the situation carefully and working with local and state partners to assess and respond. The CCHD says the best way to prevent bird flu is to avoid sources of exposure whenever possible.
