Dan Levy was “thinking about” a ‘Schitt’s Creek’ sequel series before Catherine O’Hara died

Dan Levy says he was considering a Schitt’s Creek sequel series before the death of his co-star, Catherine O’Hara.

In January, O’Hara passed away at the age of 71 due to a pulmonary embolism, with an underlying cause of rectal cancer.

Later in her life, O’Hara enjoyed a career resurgence thanks to her central role as Moira Rose – an eccentric and flamboyant former soap opera star – in the Canadian sitcom created by Levy and his father Eugene.

Now, Levy has revealed he was considering creating a sequel series to the show before O’Hara’s death.

During a recent interview on CBS News’ Sunday Morning, the Emmy-winning actor, producer, and showrunner visited Goodwood — the small town in Ontario, Canada, where Schitt’s Creek was filmed — for the first time since the sitcom wrapped in 2020.

While standing outside the store that was called Rose Apothecary on the show, Levy was asked if there was any chance for a sequel series.

“No. Not now,” Levy replied. “You can’t.” However, he added “thinking about it” before O’Hara died.

“It’s tough, it’s tough being back,” he said. “I didn’t think that I’d have quite an emotional reaction.” He later added, “Just a lot of memories, a lot of memories with Catherine. It’s what you have to hold on to, is the memories of it all.”

Following O’Hara’s death, Levy shared a moving tribute, saying it was a “gift” to have been able to “dance in the warm glow” of the late actress, adding: “It’s hard to imagine a world without her in it.”

O’Hara was also well known for playing the mother of Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McAllister in the first two Home Alone films, with Culkin saying that he “thought we had time” in a touching tribute of his own.

She was also a part of two of the biggest shows of recent years – The Last Of Us and The Studio – and her co-stars Pedro Pascal and Seth Rogen were among others to share posts following the news of her death. See a selection of tributes here.

Last week, Rogen opened up about the “unbelievable challenge” of making the second season of The Studio without O’Hara.

While picking up a Directors Guild Award for The Studio in February, Rogen also used his speech to pay tribute to O’Hara. “The best part of her is she showed that you can be an utter genius and also the nicest person in the entire world,” he said. “Every day, we work very hard to make the show good enough to warrant her time and her presence. So ultimately we would like to thank the DGA for this, but we would mostly like to thank Catherine O’Hara.”
