The Viva El Birdos Podcast – Episode 80: “Cool Cats Wear Tilted Hats” W/Matt Pauley

By Jake Wood Sep 8, 2026 | 12:00 PM

Happy Tuesday, Cardinals fans! I know you were probably looking forward to hearing from Cardinals assistant GM Rob Cerfolio. Unfortunately, he was busy this past week (I know), so we had to reschedule. No matter, we filled the date with one heck of a contingency plan! Host of the pre-and postgame show for the Cardinals’ flagship radio network, 1120AM/104.1FM KMOX. You can also hear Matt routinely on the “Gashouse Gang” show as well as “Redbird Rush hour” daily from 5-6 PM CDT, and finally on occasional nights that allow additional programing you can hear Matt host “Sports Open Line” where they routinely discuss Cardinals topics with guests but also will talk other St. Louis area sports teams as well and will interact with guest phone calls. Matt is one of the hardest-working guys in the St. Louis media, and It’s a privilege to have him be so accommodating and available to join the show.

On this week’s show, Gabe and I were joined by Matt, and we discussed a TON of topics. Hancel Rincon’s “tilted hat” debacle with Doug Eddings, which was well represented by Gabe’s fashion choice throughout the duration of the recording. We also touched on what the one moment from this season you will remember most, Cooper Hjerpe’s excellent debut, Leo Bernal’s ascension and just how good he already is, Busch Stadium and its role in suppressing the Cardinals offense, which starting pitcher Matt is most confident in, that’s currently on the roster, for 2027, and we wrap up with a discussion about what a last gasp playoff push looks like for the Cardinals as they begin to wind down the 2026 season.

I know some of you prefer shorter 30-45 minute episodes, but the conversation was just too good and we had too many topics we wanted to discuss that we were unable to keep it under an hour, I hope you enjoy this episode and we have MANY great guests lined up for you over the coming weeks, up to, and including, the conclusion of the season and beyond.

Also, one last note for YouTube users, I had issues getting this weeks episode to upload for some reason, so this week’s episode is only being shared via spotify, if you’re viewing it on a web browser its essentially the same thing. I will look to resolve that and many other issues over the coming days and weeks.

-Also no transcript this week, apologies, Im a one man podcast production crew and struggling to do it all!

-Thanks for listening
