NME’s latest star of The Cover, Kwn, has put together an exclusive playlist to accompany the story’s launch – check it out below.
The breakout British R&B star is on this week’s (May 26) edition of The Cover, a manifestation of NME’s commitment to supporting emerging talent across the globe on a weekly basis. Every week, a rising artist will feature on The Cover – you can read Kwn’s profile here, written by Kyann-Sian Williams and featuring photography by Hannah Cosgrove.
Kwn has put together ‘Bedroom Bangers’, a playlist of songs to turn up the heat in the bedroom. Her selections include tracks by Justin Timberlake, Musiq Soulchild, Jodeci and her friend and collaborator Kehlani. Listen to the full playlist on Spotify below and on Apple Music.
In The Cover, Kwn discussed her fondness for writing “sexy, feeling myself kind of music”, like that found on her upcoming second EP ‘With All Due Respect’. “It’s fun to make,” she explained. “I think that’s why I find it hard to be vulnerable with my music, like, ‘Here we go: another sad song, another thing to make me feel sad again.’ I just want to feel good.”
The rising star also discussed taking a leaf out of Nipsey Hussle’s book and taking inspiration from his 2013 Proud2Pay campaign, where he sold 1,000 copies of his ‘Crenshaw’ mixtape at $100 apiece to prove that fans will back what they believe in. She used that as a template for her viral breakout song ‘Worst Behaviour’ to help fund the mixing and mastering of the track. “At first, I was like, ‘Oof, I don’t know about this. This might make us look a little bit desperate,” she said. “But it just went bow. All that hard work paid off.”
