The whole second season of Wednesday has arrived on Netflix, but who is Lady Gaga playing in the new episodes?
The first season of The Addams Family spinoff aired in 2022 and quickly became the second most-streamed English language show on Netflix, and a second season was commissioned at the start of 2023.
The first four episodes of season two dropped on August 6, with the remaining four following on September 3. Jenna Ortega returns in the title role, while half of the new episodes have been directed by Tim Burton.
Alongside Ortega are Catherine Zeta-Jones, Fred Armisen and Luis Guzman. New additions to the cast include Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, Evie Templeton and Noah Taylor, while guest appearances will come from Joanna Lumley, Thandiwe Newton and Haley Joel Osment.
In a four-star review of the first part of season two, NME wrote: “A frantic mid-season finale sets things up for an explosive return in September, which will also see the arrival of Lady Gaga’s Rosaline Rotwood. Perhaps that next batch of episodes will take the beloved series to new places after part one sticks carefully to the familiar, if successful, formula.”
A third season has already been commissioned, with showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar also now working on a spinoff series.
Who is Lady Gaga playing in Wednesday season two?
Gaga was confirmed as joining the cast for the new season last November.
At a Tudum event in June, it was revealed that she would play Rosaline Rotwood, a legendary teacher at Nevermore Academy who specialises in the dark arts. The character made her appearance in the second half of the season in September, showing up in episode six.
Rotwood’s presence is spectral, appearing as a ghost in Nevermore. She uses the school’s supernatural rules and rituals to restore Wednesday’s psychic sight, although it results in a Freaky Friday-style body swap between Wednesday and her friend Enid.
To accompany her appearance in the show, Gaga has released the new single ‘The Dead Dance’, along with a Tim Burton-directed video. Watch above.
Speaking at the season two premiere, Gaga explained (via Rolling Stone): “I had a wonderful time working on Wednesday season two, even just being a small part of the show. I loved working with Tim Burton and Jenna [Ortega], and everyone here, it’s so incredible. Thank you. I’m also here to confirm my song ‘The Dead Dance’ is coming.”
During an appearance at SXSW in March, Ortega opened up about working with Gaga: “It’s the best. She’s the best, definitely one of the most talented individuals I’ve ever worked with. It was just a really, really special environment to be there with her and Tim [Burton], two people that I respect and have been inspired by so much.”
“Then just finding out that she’s such a sweetheart and really kind and reserved, it’s very strange. I love that you never know what to expect from her, but you can always expect kindness and generosity,” Ortega continued.
