(Undated) — Illinois Department of Transportation is cautioning the public to be on the lookout for road buckling due to extreme heat. According to IDOT, pavement failures or blowouts occur in extreme heat due to “thermal expansion,” causing the pavement to buckle up or blow out, resulting in uneven driving surfaces, which can prove hazardous to cars. IDOT says it has crews monitoring for pavement buckling and can make repairs quickly. You are advised not to drive over a pavement failure if possible. Pavement failures can be reported to IDOT by calling 800-452-4368. IDOT officials also advised drivers to bring drinking water with them if traveling in the extreme heat, as becoming stranded could be dangerous without proper hydration.
