John graduated from Newton Community High School in 1975 and enrolled at Lincoln Technical Institute in Indianapolis, IN., where he became a certified auto mechanic. John then went to work at McClane Motors in Newton, IL. Most everyone will remember John as the Service Manager for the dealership.

From the very beginning, John was a public servant, he was a part time EMT for Jasper County Ambulance Service from 1982 through 2002, then became a full time Paramedic in 2003 where he continued to serve until his retirement in 2023.

John joined the Wade Township Fire Protection District in 1980 and served until 2003. During his years of service, he held the positions of Rescue Captain, Assistant Chief and Chief, retiring as Chief in 2003.

On April 11, 1981, John married his forever love, Lora R. (Hires). To complete this family portrait, there are five grandchildren, Noah, Leah, Callie, Liam and Luke Curtright and one more on the way.

John was a simple man and held simple beliefs, he felt as though he could “Beat” this aggressive stage four cancer and return to his life of service. It was his request that his body be cremated. With that in mind, John will be cremated, and a Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.

John’s family suggests that those wishing to honor John’s life, and his community service do so by donating to the Newton Firefighter’s Association, 101 N. First Avenue, Newton, IL 62448
