Oblong Mayor Asks Residents to Keep Grass Clippings out of the Road

(Oblong) — The Village of Oblong is reminding residents to keep grass clippings off the road. Oblong Mayor, Teresa Fielder, took to social media yesterday to remind the public that if you live along Main Street or Range Street and 1 block north of Main, please try to keep grass clippings off these curbed/drained streets. She says water draining from the West Main area goes to storm sewers, and any debris causes problems in this system. Water draining from Range Street eastward runs into Oblong Lake. She says high amounts of grass clippings entering the lake cause the nitrogen levels to rise, which in turn promotes algae growth. Fielder reminds village residents that the Oblong Public Works crew will pick up bagged grass clippings, sticks, and yard waste at any time. This service is free to all Village residents. When you are ready to have items picked up, please call Oblong Public Works at 618-592-3122 to be placed on the pick-up list.
