Debbie Harry reveals who she’d love to play her in Blondie biopic: “I would be in heaven”

Debbie Harry has revealed who she’d like to play her in a potential Blondie biopic.

In a new interview with The Times, Harry shared her opinion on who would be best to portray her, saying: “If it were somebody like Florence Pugh, I would be in heaven.”

She continued, “I just think she’s a great actor and she could do anything.”

It’s not the first time Harry has spoken publicly about a biopic for the band. Back in 2014, she said she supported the idea, and that a film would help people have a “finer appreciation” of them.

At the time, she said: “It’s difficult. You can only really skim the surface. If it’s good entertainment, honest, well-acted and directed? Maybe,” she replied when asked about her thoughts on the matter. “I think many people could be informed and have a finer appreciation of the person or era.”

Before that, in 2007, she defended Kirsten Dunst from criticism after she was cast to play her in a biopic that never came to fruition, saying: “She’s probably capable of a lot of things she hasn’t been asked to do yet, and doing something that’s sort of left of centre would be great for her.”

Harry released her book Face It: A Memoir in 2019, charting her rise in the downtown New York City scene of the 1970s to become a global superstar, as well as how she overcame heroin addiction, bankruptcy and Blondie breaking up.

A biopic could be based on any of the Blondie members’ memoirs, with Chris Stein sharing his, Under A Rock, last year, and Harry’s Face It coming out in 2019.

In other Blondie news, the band are set to release a new album this year, marking their first since drummer Clem Burke died.

The musician died in April following a “private battle with cancer”. He was 70 years old. Burke had been recruited by frontwoman Harry and guitarist Chris Stein shortly after Blondie formed in 1975.

Before Burke’s death, Blondie were already scheduled to share a new album at some point in 2025, but an exact release date is still not yet known. The follow-up to 2017’s ‘Pollinator’ is helmed by Grammy-winning producer John Congleton (St. VincentPhoebe BridgersThe War On Drugs).

Guitarist Chris Stein has since confirmed that the album will be released around the “last quarter” of 2025. He revealed the news in a post on Twitter/X back in July, with a photo of Harry and Conglerton in the studio together.

Responding to a fan who then asked if Burke played on much of the album, Stein said that he “played the whole thing”, though he added he didn’t know if the band would be touring.

It comes after Harry said earlier this year that she can’t see a future of live performances as Blondie.

Harry told NME in 2021 that Blondie were “in the process of setting up a period of time to lay down some tracks” for another LP. “We’re already looking at 10-12 songs, but it feels too early to talk about it,” she said at the time.
