(Undated) — Valentine’s Day is Saturday and the BBB is issuing its annual “Romance Scam” warning. Better Business Bureau Investigator, Don O’Brien, says “romance scams” differ slightly from other “catfishing” scams.
According to O’Brien, last year the BBB received over five hundred reports of “romance scams” with an average loss of over six thousand dollars. A recent study of the five-hundred-fifty-one cases indicated total financial losses, as a result of romance scams, exceeded fourteen million dollars. O’ Brien says scammers often target people over the age of 65 with fake profiles. For those looking to make a report on a romance scam, visit BBB.org.
