(Undated) — February is Earthquake Preparedness Month, and public safety experts are promoting earthquake preparation. Illinois is home to the New Madrid and Wabash Valley seismic zones, which have historically produced large earthquakes. Earthquakes pose a real threat in Illinois, as evidenced by a swarm of earthquakes that hit approximately 200 years ago. Experts say the recent 3.8 quake in Montgomery County is not necessarily a sign the seismic zones are “waking up.” Illinois hasn’t had a “major” earthquake since its modern infrastructure, like bridges, utility lines, and skyscrapers, has been built.
