USPS Changes Could Cause Issues With Late Mail-In Ballots

(Undated) — The U.S. Postal Service recently made some “workflow changes” that could impact mail-in ballots in March. Crawford County Clerk, Beckie Staley, says the change could delay or even invalidate vote-by-mail ballots if not postmarked in time. Previously, mail was postmarked the day you dropped it in the mailbox. However, now it will be postmarked the day it’s processed at the post office, which can sometimes be one to two days later. She reminds voters that vote-by-mail ballots must be postmarked by election day to be counted and any ballots with a late postmark will not be counted. She says if you are returning your ballot within a week of or on Election Day, request a “manual postmark” at the post office counter. The new USPS postmark policy comes just weeks ahead of the Illinois Primary on March 17th.
