(Undated) — It’s “tax season,” and the IRS is again warning the public to look out for scammers trying to steal your refund and identity. They remind the public of some things to look out for, including “a big payday.” If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Be wary of “demands and threats.” They say impersonators often want you to pay “now or else.” They threaten arrest or deportation and don’t let you question or appeal the amount of tax you owe. The IRS also warns against “odd website links.” They say odd or misspelled web links can take you to harmful sites instead of IRS.gov. They say to ignore any emails and texts about your taxes. The IRS will typically contact you the first time by mail delivered by the USPS, not via text message or email. They never direct message or take payment on social media or accept gift cards or prepaid debit cards as payment.
