(Undated) — With dangerously high levels of heat forecast across the state, the Illinois Department of Public Health is warning Illinoisans to take preventive actions to avoid heat-related illnesses. According to IDPH officials, exposure to extreme heat, and especially prolonged exposure, can cause serious health complications, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke. They are also reminding everyone to look out for the signs and symptoms of heat stroke. Symptoms include an extremely high body temperature, rapid pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. They say if any of these signs are present, seek medical attention immediately. They also remind everyone to drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol, apply sunscreen every two hours, wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations, and limit outdoor activity.
