ISP Releases Video of Effingham Church Shooting

(Effingham) — Illinois State Police are releasing video of a deadly shooting in July at a church in Effingham. Authorities say security at St. John’s Lutheran Church contacted Effingham Police on July 5th to report a suspicious man inside the church wishing to speak with the pastor. The Effingham Police Department and the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office responded to the church, locating the man, 36-year-old Allen Gattino of St. Charles, Missouri. During the investigation, officers learned he had arrived in a vehicle reported stolen from Marion County. Officers from both agencies attempted to restrain Gattino. During the struggle, he produced a firearm, which discharged, and he was struck. Gattino was taken to a local hospital and later transported by helicopter to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries where he was pronounced deceased.
