Warm and Wet Forecast for the Start of the Winter Solstice

By Tony Collins Dec 21, 2023 | 6:36 AM

(Undated) – The current forecast for our Christmas weekend looks cloudy, warm, and wet. According to the National Weather Service, we can expect rain and daytime highs in the 50s and 60s through Tuesday. They say despite the forecast, the winter solstice takes place at 9:27 pm this evening. Tonight, the amount of possible daylight is at its shortest amount. The National Weather Service says during the winter solstice, the Earth’s axis is tilted at its farthest point from the sun, 23.5 degrees. While we’re actually about as close to the Sun as we typically get each year, it is the low sun angle that causes this period to be colder than summer.
