Time Change Means Time to Check Your Smoke Alarms

By Tony Collins Oct 31, 2024 | 6:39 AM

(Undated) – The time change is this weekend and once again fire officials say it’s a great time to check your smoke detectors. The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal reminds residents to test, inspect, and replace any broken or expired smoke and CO alarms. The National Fire Protection Association reports that between 2014-2018, almost three out of every five home fire deaths in the U.S. resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or non-working smoke alarms. In fires in which the smoke alarms were present but did not operate, two of every five of the smoke alarms had missing or disconnected batteries. Dead batteries caused 26% of the smoke alarm failures.
