(Undated) – Drivers statewide may notice higher gas prices thanks to new legislation going into effect today in Illinois. The statewide gas tax jumps by two cents to forty-seven cents a gallon. That combined with the eighteen point four cent federal gas tax makes Illinois one of the most expensive states to fill up, second only to California which has a total gas tax of sixty-nine point eight cents. According to the Illinois Policy Institute, the increase will cost drivers approximately $184 more per year to buy gas than it did in 2019.
