(Undated) — For those looking to help out with hurricane relief, the Better Business Bureau has a warning, avoid post-disaster fraud. BBB Investigator, Don O’Brien, says scammers tend to target those online looking to make a difference and the BBB says “just think before you donate.”
If engaging in online donations, O’Brien recommends the donor investigates if the relief charity provides an on-the-ground presence. The Department of Justice has also issued a warning to avoid anyone who promises they can help those in need qualify for relief for a fee. They say that is an instant red flag of “bad actors.”
