IDOT Reminds Driver to Look Out for Deer

By Tony Collins Nov 19, 2024 | 6:39 AM
(Undated) – Drivers are being reminded to be extra alert behind the wheel this time of year as deer are on the move.
That was Illinois Department of Transportation Public Information Officer, Paul Wappel. Wappel says 69% of those accidents happened in “rural areas” with 72% happening at twilight or nighttime. He also reminds drivers that if you see one deer there are likely more as they tend to travel in packs. Wappel also reminds drivers that one of the most important things to remember is “don’t veer for a deer.” Authorities say if a deer jumps into your path, apply the brakes and hold the wheel firmly. After impact, safely pull your vehicle well off the roadway and call 911.
