By Tony Collins Mar 21, 2025 | 6:33 AM

(Undated) — Tax season is here and the Better Business Bureau says scammers are out in full force. BBB Investigator, Don O’Brien, says scammers are posing as the IRS and trying to mislead Illinois residents into thinking they owe money. O’Brien says government agencies will never contact you via text message.

O’Brien says the best way to avoid being targeted by scammers is to file your taxes as soon as possible. The last day to file federal income tax returns is April 15th. O’Brien says many will receive the scam texts even after April 15th, as scammers try to trick those behind on taxes.
