Ameren Issues Mylar Balloon Warning

By Tony Collins May 5, 2025 | 6:40 AM

(Undated) — Ameren is issuing its annual “Mylar balloon warning.” Ameren Illinois says that during graduation and birthday parties, you will often see these balloons and asks you to do everything you can to keep them from floating away. They say Mylar balloons can conduct electricity, resulting in surges that can cause power outages, start fires, and cause significant damage to the electric grid. Ameren Illinois’, Kevin Young, says these balloons can pose a threat to your electric service. He says when no longer in use, you are asked to puncture and deflate the balloons before creatively reusing or disposing of them. If a balloon or another toy becomes entangled in an overhead power line, do not attempt to retrieve it. Call Ameren Illinois for assistance.
