(Oblong) — Oblong Mayor, Teresa Fielder, has issued a “Scam Warning.” Fielder says that recently an Oblong resident received a text message allegedly notifying her of high water usage at her residence, followed by a number to call to verify. Fielder reassures the public that Oblong Public Works will not send a text to inform you of water consumption. If there is an issue, the office will call you directly. Local authorities remind you to never provide personal information over the telephone to unknown parties. Officials say it is important to remain alert and be vigilant to recognize these scams and take measures to protect yourself. Never click on a link or call a number received in text messages or emails. The safest and simplest thing to do if you receive one of these messages or calls is to simply hang up or delete the message.
