Drive Safe During Weekend Winter Storms

By Tony Collins Jan 22, 2026 | 6:47 AM

(Undated) – With the threat of snowy weather in our forecast, drivers are again being reminded of some simple winter driving safety tips. When traveling on snowy roads, you should leave at least one and a half car lengths between you and the vehicle in front of you. Pump your brakes gently when slowing or stopping. If you start to slide, take your foot off the gas, let the vehicle slow, lightly pump the brakes, and remember to “turn into the slide.” If you do slide off the road, put your emergency flashers on, stay in your car, and call 911. If you are following or approaching a snowplow, slow down, give it room to work, and never try to pass. For Illinois road conditions, visit gettingaroundillinois.com.
