(Undated) – If you’ve been putting off filing your taxes, your time is up. Today is the federal tax deadline for most Americans. If you’re not ready, you can file for a six-month filing extension, but tax experts caution that’s not an extension to pay the IRS if you owe. You must still pay the estimated tax owed by the April 15th deadline to avoid interest and late payment penalties. According to the IRS, the average refund amount this year is up about 11% to $3,462. At last check, the IRS has refunded more than $242 billion so far in 2026. If you need to file an extension, visit IRS.gov.
