(Undated) – “Mowing Season” is in full swing and authorities are again reminding everyone to keep the clippings off the roads. Authorities say not only is it illegal, but it is also potentially dangerous. The addition of debris on the road can cause loss of traction and control for a motorcyclist and motorists of any kind. According to Illinois law, it is illegal to deposit grass clippings onto any public roadway, as it may cause injury to motorists or become a traffic hazard. There is also an ordinance in Robinson forbidding the practice. City officials say the additional waste on the road gets washed into the storm drains and clogs the city sewer system. Those mowing are reminded to aim the mower discharge chute inward toward the lawn, rather than toward the street. Experts say grass clippings are a free form of fertilizer for your lawn. By blowing them out into the street, instead of back onto your yard, you’re depriving your lawn of that nitrogen content.
