Lookout for the Ongoing Heatwave

By Tony Collins Aug 11, 2026 | 6:33 AM

(Undated) — As the current heatwave continues, officials are urging residents to take precautions. Everyone should drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol, apply sunscreen every two hours, wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations, and limit outdoor activity. The Illinois Department of Public Health is reminding everyone to look out for the signs and symptoms of heat stroke. Symptoms include an extremely high body temperature, rapid pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. They say if any of these signs are present, seek medical attention immediately. Then, find a cool place, preferably in an air-conditioned, indoor setting. Visit keepcool.illinois.gov for more tips and resources to beat the heat.
