Investigation Continues into Mattoon Building Collapse

(Mattoon) — A building is severely damaged after it collapsed in Mattoon. The incident happened yesterday near 19th Street and Western Avenue. Authorities say it is unclear what caused the two-story building to collapse. The Mattoon Fire Department and the building’s insurance company will conduct investigations to determine the cause of the collapse. The tobacco store, which was in the building, will have to be completely torn down. Reports indicate there was just a single employee inside who was able to get out before the collapse. No other injuries were reported, and city officials aren’t aware of any previous structural concerns with the building.
